January 6th, 2013 - Write a letter to a complete stranger

I love to get personal mail.  Absolutely, totally love it.  It's great to open the mail box and find something that isn't a bill or an offer for a credit card. There is just something so personal about it, something that has gotten lost through texting and tweeting and emails. A postcard from a far off place, or a letter from a friend that I haven't heard from in awhile, will always bring a smile to my face.

I wanted to do the same for someone else today.  I picked a name at random from WhitePages.com, and with the help of my fiance, wrote her a letter.  This is what it said:

Dearest Aubrey,

I trust that this letter finds you well.  Since our last correspondence, life truly has been on the up and up.  I am no longer taken by consumption, and my humors are of the desirable sort.  A ballyhoo indeed!

On the romantic front, my mail order bride arrived by steamer in time for Christmas merriment.  I have endeavored to teach her the ways of our more advanced culture.  Results have been mixed.  Though we have not yet consummated our love, we have nonetheless begun babyproofing our home for our expected child.

Forgive me for rambling on and on about my fortunes.  I hope with a most sincere heart that 2013 brings you the same.  You, of all the blessed folk, deserve the best.  By the by, how did running away with the circus turn out?

Please write back at your earliest convenience.  Svetlana and I will be visiting my relatives in Canada for more than several fortnights, but we shall return before the ides of March.  Again, my deepest wishes for your happiness and good health.

Yours, in humble and honorable service,
Lars C. Farabee, esq.

I then put it in the mailbox for tomorrow's pick up. Yes, today's activity was a silly one.  But we need silly sometimes.  Silly is good.  It reminds us to not take ourselves or each other too seriously.  It keeps us laughing and smiling, and we all could use more of that.

I just hope Aubrey sees it the same way.  I hope that she smiles a little bit at this letter.  And if she's having a rough start to her year, I hope this letter makes her a little happier.

I also hope she writes back!
