Welcome to the Spice of Life Month!

Last January, I celebrated a holiday every day according to when they happened throughout the year.  Those adventures can be found at theholidaymonth.blogspot.com.  It was a fun way to kick off 2012, and it helped me to realize that every day should be cause for celebration no matter how big or how small.  It also helped make 2012 easily the best year of my life.

I had so much fun with my blog last year that I wanted to do something similar as 2013 got underway.  I wanted to make it a tradition, and it was that thought that lead me to this month's project.

Our lives are filled with routines.  We all have our morning rituals, and we all have things we do to unwind after a long day at work.  We might have a rotation of clothes we wear (my orange shirt and orange tie go on at least once a week, for example), and we might have TV shows that we have to be home for every week. Tuesday nights might be taco nights for some, while Sundays might be pizza days for others.  Routines are comforting, as they allow us a method to control lives that at times feel like they are far out of our control.

But routines can also be limiting.  They can close us off from experiences that we would have if we weren't shackled to the hum-drummery of daily life.  Routines can often keep us from trying new things.

So, to keep that from happening, I will be trying something new each and every day during the month of January.  They will be things that I myself have never done before yet have wanted to do at some point.  I'm embarrassed to admit some of them (I mean, come on, what English major has never read Hamlet?), and I am nervous for others (I can only hope I will hit the rim during my half court shot).  Some are simple things, and some will take a great deal of effort.

It's a jump start on my bucket list, and I'm excited to see if it will work out (talking in cliches all day is going to be interesting to say the least).  By trying something new every day, I hope to break free of my own routines.  The poet William Cowper once said that variety is the spice of life.  Here's to making January 2013 very spicy indeed!
